Emergency Weather
Hello everyone. I hope that you are getting ready for summer camp. The camp staff is doing their finishing touches on the camp in preparation for your arrival. We are looking forward to your week in camp.As we all know by now, the Scouting family experienced a tragic situation this week with the loss of four of our own due to a tornado in the state of Iowa. During this trying time, I would like to briefly review with you what our policy is in regards to weather emergencies at camp in order to better inform concerned parents, scouts or leaders.
The first step to the safety of all of our participants is to have a plan put together. As we learned in camp school, if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. The camp staff has guidelines on how to handle all emergency situations in camp. This handbook explains everyoneâ??s responsibility in the event of a crisis and what best practice would suggest. This extensive handbook has already been reviewed with this years camp staff as well as the command staff to ensure that we are prepared for any situation that may arise at camp. I should also note that in the past our emergencies have been observed by professional fire fighters, police officers and emergency medical personnel, and they have noted that our emergency plan is one of the most extensive and clearly defined plans that they have ever seen.
In regards to severe weather, our office staff is constantly observing weather conditions approaching the reservation. With the addition of high speed internet on the reservation we are able to have updated weather maps by the minute to observe potential weather problems.
When inclement weather presents itself on reservation, the camp staff is notified via our camp radio system and given further instructions from either myself or Andy McPeek. Best practice and the guide to safe scouting informs us to take cover in a near by building or shelter. At no time are campers moved in the middle of a storm, they should simply take cover where they are.
Yours in Scouting,
